You’ve decided what to eat this week and you’ve shopped with a list and only bought what you want so that’s it, right? Brownie points?
Well, not so fast. Want to make it even quicker when it comes down the 5pm panic?
One of the best ways to speed up your cooking process is to employ a few meal-prep ‘hacks’: a simple list of tasks that, if done upfront or as habit, could ease the burden even further. So before you reach for that celebratory coffee or wine, check out my favourite 12 Ways to Get Ahead with your Meal Prep.
Get Ahead with Getting Fed
#1 Chop and wash fruits and veggies when you get home from the store; or if you don’t have the time, you could always buy ready-chopped!
#2 Pin up a list of the meals for the week on the fridge, with the recipes if you need them, so they’re ready at a glance.
#3 Use a slow cooker/crock pot for days when you won’t be around for last-minute cooking.
#4 Use the microwave!
#5 Prepare packed lunches the night before – or even for the whole week.
#6 Put aside some time on the weekend to batch cook (curries, stews, marinades); you’ll only have to wash up once and you’ll save loads of time in the week.
#7 Try some make-ahead breakfasts like overnight oats or make smoothie bags or granola pots so you can grab and go when you’re tired.
#8 Prep, pre-cook and freeze brown rice or grains (freeze when completely cold) to reheat at will.
#9 If you don’t have time to batch cook on the weekend, then just make double (or triple) of something when you cook in the week. It’ll keep 2-3 days in the fridge too!
#10 Get the kids involved and make an afternoon of it. It’ll give them something to do and give you a head start!
#11 Cook easy meals with only 6 ingredients or fewer, like those on this website.
#12 Try frozen fruits and veggies and meat you can cook from frozen to cut down on preparation time and to stop you wasting things unused.
